Community Business Lenders

Bill Kurtz

Chief Executive Officer

Bill Kurtz

Bill Kurtz joined the team in July 2017 and served as Chief Lending Officer until October 2019 when he became CEO. Bill’s commercial lending career stretches back to 1995, the same year he graduated from The University of Iowa with a degree in finance.

Bill has seen a great deal of change over the course of his career. He likes to remind the younger members of the team that when his career started, fax machines were the new technology, people would wait in line to type a letter on one of two computers, the internet was this mysterious thing starting to be talked about, voicemails didn’t exist but paper message slips sure did and hand-held cell phones were the exception, not the rule.

Bill has worked for small community banks and large super-regional banks, excelling in both. Bill gained his first leadership experience when he oversaw the acquisition and turnaround of a failed community bank at the onset of the Great Recession. From there he led the Northern Great Plains commercial banking division for a super-regional bank based in California. He then led all banking operations as Iowa President for a super-regional bank based in Alabama. As large banks like to do, they hired consultants and a complete reorganization of the company was on the horizon. The timing was perfect for Bill to explore a career with Community Business Lenders when he was approached about the Chief Lending Officer position. The rest is history and Bill could not be happier in the credit union world.

Bill resides in Urbandale, Iowa and is married with two adult children. In his free time, Bill is an avid angler, aspiring golfer, and follower of Iowa Hawkeye sports
